Occupational Exposure Limits Regulations

Occupational Exposure Limits (OEL) values are adopted under two legal frameworks that form an integral part of the EU’s mechanism for protecting the health of workers:

  • Directive 98/24/EC on the Protection of the Health and Safety of Workers from the Risks related to Chemical Agents at Work (CAD directive)
  • Directive 2004/37/EC on the Protection of Workers from the Risks to Exposure to Carcinogens, Mutagens or Reprotoxic Substances at Work (CMRD directive)

These directives outline certain results that European Member States need to achieve by transposing the requirements of the directives into national legislation.

They set out minimum standards for worker protection.

Occupational exposure limits adopted by the EU need to be integrated into the EU member states national legislative frameworks.
